Know Your Rights, Keep Your Apartment: Six Steps for Tenants
Posted: June 5, 2017 - 7:39am

Accelerated gentrification in Prospect Heights over the last decade has resulted in significant displacement of residents from our community. In fact, PHNDC has estimated that between 2000 and 2014, more than a fifth of Prospect Heights’ residents were likely directly displaced from the neighborhood.

How can tenants protect themselves against being forced out of Prospect Heights? PHNDC is teaming up with IMPACCT Brooklyn and JustFix.nyc to help tenants with six steps to know your rights and keep your apartment.

Step 1: Prepare yourself. Have the facts about your lease, and know your rights.

Step 2: Fix your rent. Take advantage of programs that can reduce your rent.

Step 3: Build your case. Tenant harassment is illegal. Don’t let your landlord get away with it.

Step 4: Connect with help. Community-based organizations are here to assist you.

Step 5: Grow your circle. You, your neighbors, and your community are stronger together.

Step 6: Keep your housing options open. Thousands of new affordable apartments will be build over the next decade in this part of Brooklyn. You have a chance to win one.
