Step 6: Keep your housing options open
Posted: June 5, 2017 - 9:43am

Thousands of new affordable apartments will be build over the next decade in this part of Brooklyn. You have a chance to win one.

Tenants in Prospect Heights should be aware of a large inventory of new affordable housing becoming available in this neighborhood and its vicinity over the next several years. (For a map of nearby locations and 1500 apartments expected to become available between 2016 and 2018, click here.) These apartments represent an opportunity for tenants to receive a lease that will stay stabilized for the long term (usually 30 years or longer), at a rent they can afford.

Affordable apartments subsidized by the City of New York are offered through its Housing Connect lottery system. You can register to participate in affordable housing lotteries at www.nyc.gov/housingconnect. Once you register, you can sign up to be notified when lotteries for new buildings begin taking applications. While affordable housing lotteries are competitive, you can’t win if you don’t participate. It won’t cost you anything, and IMPACCT Brooklyn offers workshops to help you improve your chances of success. Contact Stephanie Blue at stephanie_blue@impacctbk.org to find out more.
