Summer Streets comes to Vanderbilt Avenue
Posted: May 28, 2009 - 12:52pm

Every Sunday this June from noon to 5 PM, Vanderbilt Avenue between Dean Street and Park Place will be closed to cars and transformed into a temporary pedestrian plaza for people to play, stroll, ride bikes - or simply enjoy the summer day. There will be music, art and gardening, face painting, sun and trees, shopping, eating and relaxing, biking and performances, and people watching. Plus a few surprises.

Here's your chance to read a book under a tree, impress your friend with your hula hoop skills, learn to skate board, or just stroll down the middle of the street eating an ice cream cone.

Summer Streets on Vanderbilt Avenue is a smaller version of the successful Summer Streets program that ran along Park Avenue in Manhattan last August and is part of NYC’s initiative to create a healthier, more livable and sustainable city. It is sponsored by PHNDC and the Vanderbilt Avenue Merchants District, in cooperation with the NYC Department of Transportation, and with support from Council Member Letitia James, Heart of Brooklyn and the Independence Community Foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions about Summer Streets on Vanderbilt:

How can I help?
You can help by: setting up and cleaning up on any of the days of the event; distributing flyers and postcards; supervising activities in the “kids zone”; arranging musicians and performers; taking photographs; making a donation to help cover expenses and spreading the word to friends and neighbors. See our contact info below.

Can I perform my music, dance, act, etc.?
We welcome musicians, acrobats, street performers, visual artists, etc. We’d appreciate it if you could contact us in advance – especially if you need power, want to use our stage, or want to exhibit your artwork. Otherwise, don’t hesitate to come out with your acoustic instruments, juggling balls or hula hoops.

Can I sell merchandise or promote my business?
No. This is different than a street fair; we will not have outside vendors.
