Beginning on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, and continuing for approximately one and a half weeks, the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) will continue excavating test pits along Eastern Parkway between Grand Army Plaza and Washington Avenue/Underhill Avenue (mid-block) Service Road. The work will cause short-term interruptions to curbside parking and driveway access along the affected section of Eastern Parkway. The contractor's working hours are Monday – Friday between the hours of 7:00AM and 6:00PM.
The test pits will allow the DDC to identify the location of existing sub-surface infrastructure and utility hardware. The information gathered from the test pits will be used to determine the location for the new infrastructure including the new trunk water main to be installed as part of the reconstruction project. Besides new water mains and combined sewers, the Eastern Parkway reconstruction includes
- new pavement, curbs and sidewalks
- new catch basins and chute connections
- manholes and chambers
- ADA compliant pedestrians ramps
- fire hydrants
- street lighting and traffic signals
The project is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2012. DDC's presentation on the project details is available here.
