Eastern Parkway median reconstruction to be funded with stimulus
Posted: March 31, 2009 - 9:47pm

A list of transportation projects in New York City to be funded in whole or in part with funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act published by the Mayor's office includes the renovation of the Eastern Parkway median between Washington Avenue and Grand Army Plaza.

Reconstruction of the westernmost stretch of median had been deferred after being announced in 2005, but the stimulus project list states that it will finally go out to bid in the fall of this year, with construction estimated to be complete in 2012.

The project will make the roadway more pedestrian-friendly and restore the original 1870s design by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the architects of Manhattan's Central Park and Brooklyn's Prospect Park.
