The Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council
Community Board 8's Economic Development Committee will be holding its monthly meeting to review applications from local bars and restaurants for new liquor licenses, renewal of existing licenses and extension of licenses to permit alcohol to be served in rear yards. On the agenda this month are 10 renewals or new applications for businesses in Prospect Heights. While the State Liquor Authority makes the final determination, input from the community board can help shape guidelines as to how these businesses operate in order to preserve the quality of life for residents in the community.
Input from the community board is also significant in cases where a bar or restaurant is subject to the 500 foot rule, which restricts the approval of full liquor licenses if the location is within a 500 foot radius of three other businesses with full liquor licenses. In those cases, the presumption is that the SLA will not grant a license unless it can be demonstrated that it is in the public interest to do so. In addition to the community board's recommendation, a public hearing is required to make a determination for these applications. The meeting will take place at 6:30 PM at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, 727 Classon Avenue, Brooklyn, NY (between Park and Prospect).
The Prospect Heights area applications are below:
Community Boards 2 and 6 will convene a joint session of their respective Committees to review the application by the Barclays Center arena operators for a license to sell full liquor throughout the facility. The meeting will include a presentation by representatives from Forest City Ratner, and members of the public will be able to testify.
The 77th Precinct Community Council is dedicated to improving relations between the police servicing Prospect Heights, Crown Heights and Weeksville.
Precinct Council meetings provide an opportunity for community members to share concerns about neighborhood security and quality of life with the precinct command.
(Note that the boundaries of the 77th Precinct have been adjusted to accommodate the opening of Barclays Center. The 77th Precinct now covers Prospect Heights east of Vanderbilt Avenue. West of Vanderbilt Avenue is now covered by the 78th Precinct. The next meeting of the 78th Precinct Community Council will take place on Tuesday, October 30 at 7:30PM at the 78th Precinct station house, 6th Avenue and Dean Street.)
The neighborhoods of Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, downtown Brooklyn, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Red Hook, Northern Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights face significant transportation challenges. Existing traffic and parking congestion, demands on transit service and dangerous roads for cyclists and pedestrians already pose hurdles for residents, businesses and the environment. The upcoming completion the Barclay’s Center at Atlantic Yards will further compound these challenges. The BK Gateway Transportation Workshop will lay the groundwork for developing community driven solutions to the transportation issues facing the area.

Operation Take Back our Community (TBOC) is a community event to meet and greet Community Board 8's residents, block association members, tenant association members and business owners to plan and implement a community policing program to safely monitor and report quality of life concerns and public safety issues.
Join your neighbors and get involved by identifying trouble spots, identifying block captains and alternates, recruting volunteers, creating quality of life task force groups, joining street canvass teams and working closely with community groups and organizations to monitor and implement Operation TBOC.
Operation TBOC is designed to create community accountability and responsibility to safely report public safety issues occurring in the community as well as addressing and monitoring quality of life issues such as sanitation, community beautification, law enforcement, merchant improvements and community unity.

Elected officials, local residents cite speeding through traffic, coming impacts of Barclays Center as requiring new solutions
The Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council today announced that its application to the New York City Department of Transportation for a Neighborhood Slow Zone (NSZ) in Prospect Heights has received the support of Community Board 8, Councilmember Letitia James, Assembly members Hakeem Jeffries and Joan Millman, and State Senators Velmanette Montgomery and Eric Adams.
